The students will receive a study guide for the next quiz. It will focus on Slavery in Colonial America. It will take place on Friday, February 10. 

Study Guide for Test on Slavery in Colonial America 

The students will be introduced to an on-line program called Bullying Academy, which will go into various aspects of bullying in our society. This topic fits in well with our study of intolerance which we have continued throughout the year. A letter will be sent home and posted on this blog to give details about the program. Any questions can be forwarded to Miss Alonzo, Mr. Shultz, or myself.

The students may receive  a study guide for their next test sometime late next week. More details to follow once it has been determined that we are ready to do it. 

Students can begin writing their projects. A sample essay has been posted, as well as the rubric and other requirements. Miss Williams will review MLA format for the heading, citations, and Works Cited Page in English class. All requirements are posted under “8th Grade Research Project”  under Announcements.   

The students are using the on-line program Edmodo like last year to submit their work. I would like to receive various sections of the paper for review and corrections. The first draft that will be graded will be submitted on Friday, February 10. This will count for 10% of the quarterly grade.

Study Guide for Slavery Quiz

The students have gone over the orignal 13 colonies of England. They are expected to memorize the spelling and location of these colonies. They will have a pop quiz sometime this week confirming this. Students should study the map each night to make sure they are comfortable with it. These colonies will appear on a future quiz or test.

The classes have  been broken up into groups to work on the “Slavery Statistics Project.” Each team member has an assigned task, whether to create a chart or graph, write questions, or type up a questionnaire. All students will be part of the presentation.

They will meet in class on Tuesday, January 24 to work together and give suggestions. They are also encouraged to meet independently, either at home or somewhere after school. The project is due Monday, January 30, and presentations will begin that week.

Study Guide for Reform Movements Test

Next week, we will be discussing the outline, rubric, sample paper, and expectations for the project. An outline on their topic will be due on Tuesday, January 31. Students are encouraged to begin writing after the test.

The students will be woring on an on-line progrom called “Bullying Academy” that focuses on aspects to bullying. This ties in nicely to our study of reform movements and civil rights. A letter will be sent home describing the program soon.  Students will begin using the program on Thursday, January 26.

Don’t forget about the extra credit movies under “8th Grade Extra Credit.” They are due at the end of February.

Their topic will also be associated with an assignment in English class, as well as the Digital Story that they are creating for Miss Drakes. The tentative due date for the paper in history class is mid to late February.

Topics for 8th Grade Research Paper    

Students are asked to bring the following items to class next week.

1. A packet of Notecards 

2. A folder (they can use the same one from last year)

3. Print out 3 Internet sources related to their topic. 

They also can find books on their subject. We will be in the library next week with an opportunity for them to find some books related to their topic. However, much of their research will involve on-line sources found on the St. Philip’s library page. They will need a minimum of 5 sources for their research paper.

Students can begin notetaking for their project. They received the notetaking procedures on Monday the 9th. Students should wrap up notetaking around Monday, January 23.

Disobediance Notetaking

After a prep activity related to charts and graphs, students will be broken up into groups to work on a project both in class and outside of school. This project will involve one person doing a visual, a second person creating questions, and a third person making a questionairre. All three students will be involved in a presentation. More details to follow on this assignment in the next blog entry.
